How did we get here?
Hempline helped make industrial hemp a reality in Canada.
Awarded the first hemp research licences from the Canadian federal government in 1994, Hempline planted, harvested and processed the first crop of hemp to be grown in North America since the 1950s. This first historic crop formed the foundation for Hempline's extensive research and development program to:
* establish fibre grading standards
* implement modern fibre processing technology
* explore new growing and harvesting techniques
* create new market opportunities for hemp fibre in a variety of product categories
As the change in Canadian legislation slowly evolved, Geof Kime, Hempline president, and a key figure in this evolution, spoke to the Canadian Senate Committee, testifying to the amendment of Bill C-8 in April 1996. Hempline was instrumental in successfully appealing for the implementation of commercial hemp growing regulations in March of 1998. Canadian farmers are allowed to grow hemp again, and are now entitled to receive crop insurance on hemp acreage.
As a result of Hempline's R&D program, on June 4, 1998, precisely four years after the first research crop was planted, Hempline processed its first bale of hemp stalks into hemp fibre.
